Swing Era sensation Artie Shaw was born 100 years ago Sunday. The self-taught clarinetist, bandleader, composer, and arranger served in the U.S. Navy during world War II, married eight times, and was among the first to hire a black singer (Billie Holiday) to perform with his all-white orchestra. Famous for “Begin the Beguine,” “Stardust,” and other hits, Shaw’s innovations are considered among the most important in American music.
