“Each of us was touched by these terrible attacks,” wrote President Mills to the Bowdoin community earlier this week, inviting all to “join fellow members of the Bowdoin community as we come together to remember those who perished and were injured on that terrible day, and to reflect on this national tragedy that endures in all of our hearts and minds.”
Campus observances:
- The Bowdoin Chapel will be open until 5 p.m. for prayer and meditation, as will the small meeting room in the Multicultural/Multifaith Center at 30 College Street.
- Televised observances in New York City – including the official World Trade Center Site Memorial Ceremony and Remembrance telecast – will be shown in Daggett Lounge during brunch (11 a.m.”“12:30 p.m.), as well as in Lancaster Lounge during the morning and early afternoon.
- At noon, the chimes will ring “America the Beautiful” and the campus will be invited to gather around the flagpole adjacent to the Museum of Art and Gibson Hall. President Mills will deliver brief remarks and ask those gathered to observe a moment of silence. To conclude the period of silence, the chimes will play “The Star Spangled Banner.”
- Members of the Bowdoin community are invited to attend an interfaith service at 2:30 p.m. in First Parish Church.

I remember experiencing 9/11 as a brand new Bowdoin freshman. I’ll never forget how well Bowdoin handled the tragedy and how the school made me feel like I was at home – a new home – even when the only hometown I ever knew was under attack.
