Assistant Professor of Economics Erik Nelson was among Econ 101 professors from Bryn Mawr, Columbia, Swarthmore and UNC”“Chapel Hill consulted for an article looking into whether the current crop of presidential candidates could use a refresher course in economics.
“In their view, the candidates continue to offer ideas and policies that wouldn’t pass muster in their classes – populated by 18 year-old college students,” reads the article, “2012 Candidates Slip on Econ 1o1.”
The final sentence in the linked CNN Money piece is from Jonathan Lanning, a professor of economics at Bryn Mawr:
“I can say that none of the rationales for various policies that I have heard display a basic 200-level understanding of key economic concepts,” he said.
What about the very basic Republican argument that raising tax rates (holding everything else equal)will ALWAYS increase (by some amount)a deadweight loss on economic activity (which explains why Republicans have opposed the tax rate increases the Democrats).
I’m glad I went to Bowdoin rather than Bryn Mawr.
