As the deadline looms for the expiration of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an immigration measure introduced by the Obama administration, a legal dispute is going on over whether President Trump has the authority to extend that deadline, wrote John T. Bennett in Roll Call.
“The original deadline was arbitrary and he could set another arbitrary deadline,” says Bowdoin’s Andrew Rudalevige in the article.
DACA protects an estimated 700,000 so-called “Dreamers” (people who were brought to the US as illegal immigrants when they children) from deportation. In September 2017, Trump ordered that the program be shut down after six months, on March 5, 2018.
