Meredith Jung-En Woo ’80 was officially named the 13th president of Sweet Briar College in Virginia September 22, 2017—an event described in an editorial byThe Roanoke Times as “a day that wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Two-and-a-half years ago, the all-female institutition was facing closure, until a “four-month legal battle… resulted in the alumnae taking over the college” and securing its future with an aggressive fundraising campaign.

Woo is Sweet Briar’s first long-term president since its “near-death experience,” wrote the paper, and “has instituted what can only be described as sweeping changes to the college’s business model.”

So proud of Sweetwater alumnae saving their college. As an enthusiastic Wellesley alum I feel we would have one the same thing. Very best hopes for a great future from two believers in small, GOOD schools doing the right thing. My husband is Bowdoin ”57. All the best to you, Meredith Woo. We wish you well.
