The owner and publisher of two Maine weekly newspapers—The Ellsworth American and the Mount Desert Islander—is being inducted into the Maine Press Association Hall of Fame in October. Alan Baker ’51 is to be honored along with former Bangor Daily News editor Mark Woodward.
After a successful international business career, Baker began publishing The Ellsworth American in 1989, and two years later purchased the newspaper, which saw its staff size double and advertising revenues quadruple under Baker’s guidance. He launched the Mount Desert Islander in 2001.
