Director BiosDick Fosbury
Dick Fosbury revolutionized the high jump event when he became the Olympic Gold Medal winner in 1968 in Mexico City . Fosbury will be working in groups and individually with high jumpers at the camp for two sessions each day.
Fosbury was the only competitor to clear 7' 4 1/4" in the 1968 Olympics. He used a revolutionary technique he developed while jumping in high school. The "Fosbury Flop" evolved through trial and error while Fosbury was training in high school and later at Oregon State University . In addition to his Olympic Gold Medal, Fosbury was a two-time NCAA champion, and set NCAA, American, and Olympic records during his career. He was elected to the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1992.
In 1968 Fosbury was the only Olympic high jumper using his innovative style. By 1972, thirteen of the sixteen finalist in the Munich Olympics were using the Fosbury Flop. By 1976 all the top jumpers in the world were floppers, and the flop had completely replaced the Western roll technique in which jumpers tried to straddle with their stomachs over the bar.
Dick Fosbury has been working with Maine high school athletes and coaches for the past thirteen summers. Several state and New England champions have worked with him at track camps including New England and National Indoor high school champion Craig Mielcarz of Salem , Massachusetts .
Peter SlovenskiPeter Slovenski has coached Track & Field at Bowdoin since 1987. Bowdoin teams regularly finish among the top 5 teams in New England Division III championships, and in nine seasons placed among the top 20 teams in NCAA Division III.
