“Practice for Life” Co-Authors Reflect on the College Experience with Bay Area Polar Bears Archives

It was a fun and informative evening for alumni and parents in the San Francisco Bay Area who had the opportunity to hear from Bowdoin professors and co-authors Nancy Jennings (Education) and Suzanne Lovett (Psychology). Practice for Life: Making Decisions in College (Harvard University Press, 2016), written with Wellesley College professors, Lee Cuba and Joseph Swingle, makes a case for the continuing relevance of a liberal education. Capturing data and stories over a 5-year study of New England college students (including Bowdoin students), Practice for Life uncovers what drives undergraduates to become engaged with their education.

The January 26th event was hosted by Shauna Johnston Kashyap ’05 at Collective Health, a healthcare start-up.  Following the program, guests visited with Suzanne, Nancy, and other members of the Bowdoin faculty in attendance. It was a great opportunity for alumni and parents to better understand higher education today while reflecting on their own Bowdoin experience.
