Marvin H. Green Jr. Assistant Professor of Art Jackie Brown has another honor to add to her name. She was recently awarded a Maine Artist Fellowship, one of seven Mainers to be recognized in this way for their efforts across the artistic spectrum.

With a maximum award of $5,000, the fellowships are merit-based and awarded annually by the Maine Arts Commission “to recognize artistic excellence and advance the careers of Maine artists.” Brown is praised for her “wholehearted belief in the [power of the] arts to enrich the way we see, experience, and understand the world around us.”

Brown, whose primary focus is sculpture installation, says her work aims “to create imagined biological systems that suggest growth, movement, and expansion. It’s often ambiguous as to whether the forms are benign or toxic, and I hope to suggest mutation, as if systems are melding into new and uncertain growths.”
