In honor of Earth Day, some 55 students volunteered at five local farms Saturday, including the Bowdoin Organic Garden. For 11 years Bowdoin has held an Eco-Service Day, sending out student volunteers to work outside on behalf of local organizations. Andrew Cushing ’12, who helped organized this year’s Eco-Service Day, said in the past two years students have volunteered at farms, which has been particularly popular.
Chris Jayne ’13 was one of the crew helping out Saturday afternoon at the Bowdoin garden, which supplies food for the college dining halls. He said he signed up for Eco-Service Day to get outside and “see another point of the process of food consumption.”
The other farms where students worked were Milkweed Farm in Brunswick, Two Coves Farm in Harpswell, Morris Farm in Wiscasset and the Tom Settlemire Community Garden owned by the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust in Brunswick.
