Hilton Kramer, one of the most influential art critics of his era, died Tuesday at his home in Harpswell at the age of 84.
Kramer was chief art critic for The New York Times for nearly 1o years before founding his own art magazine, The New Criterion, in 1982.
Kramer donated his papers, chiefly professional papers documenting his career as art critic at the Times and other periodicals, to the George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives in 2003.
