Every year since 2002, Bowdoin has enlisted volunteers from local nonprofits to round up the unwanted clothing, furniture, vacuums, printers, carpets, jewelry, books and other throwaways that students turf at the end of the academic year. After sorting through the mound of things, the volunteers sell them at the popular Give & Go sale in early June.
This year’s Give & Go will be held June 9 at 6 Industry Rd. in Brunswick, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bowdoin employees are invited to shop June 7, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds from the sale are distributed to participating non-profits.
This year, 21 local groups will split the money, according to Valerie Szewelanczyk, Give & Go’s coordinator. Last year, 27 nonprofits divided nearly $52,000.

Volunteers have been working since May 16 to organize the items attractively throughout the building, somewhat along the lines of a “department store,” Szewelanczyk says.
Prices range from 5 cents for many toys, art supplies and office supplies to $80 for a sofa bed. This year’s sale includes 150 bicycles, 68 refrigerators, and one pair of shiny tangerine pumps.
Another example of Bowdoin’s commitment to sustainability, Give & Go promotes the reuse of viable items and spares them from the landfill – all while helping non-profit organizations in the community.
