A group of Bowdoin theater and music students had the opportunity to meet privately with Stephen Sondheim prior to his enthralling public interview at a packed Pickard Theater on Tuesday.
The legendary composer described the importance of mentors in his young life — including Oscar Hammerstein II, whom he considered a surrogate father.
“It’s a lot more likely that you will have that one-to-one quality in an atmosphere like this,” he told Bowdoin students. “There will be a relationship that you will have with your teacher and that’s all-important.”
