Arctic in Bloom: Sea Blossoms with ‘Frost Flowers’ (NPR) Archives

In the spring of 1909, Robert E. Peary, of the Class of 1877, sailed The Roosevelt to Cape Sheridan on Ellesmere Island, from which Peary attained the North Pole by sledge. More than 100 years later, see what students found on the ocean's surface in the region.

On the way back from the North Pole, a University of Washington grad student spotted what appeared to be something growing on the frozen sea.
