Studying abroad at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, juniors Tracy Shirey and Hannah Wurgaft recently encountered a few familiar Bowdoin faces. Associate Professor of Education Chuck Dorn, who is on sabbatical in South Africa, and his wife, Susie Dorn, formerly director of the College’s Joseph McKeen Center for the Common Good, hosted Shirey, Wurgaft and three other Bowdoin juniors – Will Horne, Emily McNeil and Caitlin Hutchinson Maddox – for dinner. Susie Dorn, who’s been chronicling her experiences in her blog, Notes from Cape Town, writes about accompanying Shirey and Wurgaft to the township of Khayelitsha, where they had been volunteering over the past semester, describing “a tremendously moving afternoon, and a bit of a shot in the arm.”
