Photos: Bowdoin Polar Bear Kicks Off NYC Heritage Tour with ‘Morning Joe’ Appearance Archives

The Bowdoin Polar Bear is in The Big Apple – and on the tube! In commemoration of the College mascot’s 100th birthday, the Polar Bear  made an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe alongside Fortune magazine managing editor Andy Serwer ’81.

Serwer explained to hosts Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and viewers that it was 100 years ago tomorrow, January 18, 1913, that the Alumni Association adopted the polar bear as the official mascot of Bowdoin College at the Sherman Square Hotel – then located at 71st and Amsterdam – nearly four years after Robert Peary (Class of 1877) discovered the North Pole.

The Polar Bear kicks off its NYC tour with a stop in the green room before an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

The Polar Bear will be in Rockefeller Center tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 18, outside NBC’s Today show, beginning at 6 a.m., and then plans to go for a noontime skate in Bryant Park. Our furry friend would love to see Bowdoin students and alumni, so please stop by for a picture and some Bowdoin trinkets!  And if you’re inclined to stay, the Bear could use some help!
