Angus S. King of Brunswick was sworn in yesterday as the new junior U.S. Senator from Maine. King, who served as Distinguished Lecturer at Bowdoin from 2004-12 and as a contributor to the Bowdoin Daily Sun, is a former two-term governor of Maine with something that sets him apart from all but one of his new colleagues in the United States Senate: he’s an independent. That fact caught the attention of NBC’s Tom Brokaw, who visited King in Brunswick last month. Brokaw’s report-which includes a shout out to Bowdoin grad and former president Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (Class of 1852)-was aired last night on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.
