Bowdoin marked Veterans’ Day 2011 with a remembrance ceremony in which students, faculty and staff read the names of every fallen soldier who served with the U.S. armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Christopher Kan ’13 was inspired to organize the event during a church service off campus. “It just felt like something I had to do,” says Kan, who was joined by Derek Brooks ’12, Ben Richmond ’13, members of Brunswick’s Unitarian Universalist Church and several Bowdoin staffers.
Together, and before an audience of students and staff members who stopped by Morrell Lounge to observe the ceremony, they read the names, ages and hometowns of 6,274 service members who have lost their lives in battle.
