Bowdoin students recognized International Trans Day of Visibility, on March 31, by encouraging dialogues among first-year students on the topic of gender identity. And they used cookies to do it.

Out Peers, the students trained to offer peer support on campus, visited all eight of the first-year dorms, bringing gingerbread cookies and cookie decorating supplies. While students made colorful, creative “genderbread” cookies, they spoke about gender.

“The goal was to raise awareness about trans identities and to get students to think beyond their preconceived notions of gender,” Jude Marx ’18 said. Marx, the student coordinator for the Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity, helped execute the new “OUT in the Bricks” program.
