Give and Take: Sustainable Stuff Swap at Burnett House Archives

An easy way to be green is to reuse old stuff. To encourage recycling, Burnett House, one of the eight College Houses, held a recent “sustainable stuff swap.”

To participate, Bowdoin students had to donate clothing or other objects they didn’t use anymore. In return, they received a ticket for one free item that another student had discarded. They got to select from such items as shoes, coats, calculators and photo frames.

EcoReps Liza Tarbell ’17 and Kahla Vise ’15 helped by collecting items and advertising the event. Event organizers from Burnett House — Alex Mayer ’17, Uma Blanchard ’17 and Eva Sibinga ’17 — said they also received a great amount of help from other College Houses, Sustainable Bowdoin and Kristin Hanczor ’12.

All leftover items will be donated to a local organization, with a preference for Preble Street. Mayer, Blanchard and Sibinga said they wanted to donate to the Portland nonprofit because it helps people facing homelessness, hunger and poverty, and has an inclusive and non-discriminating policy.

Tarbell said the event ran through out the day, and turnover of items was brisk.
