The Common Good Award, selected by the Bowdoin College Board of Trustees, and Alumni Service Award and Distinguished Educator Award, chosen by the Alumni Council, recognize members of the Bowdoin community for their exemplary achievement and dedication.

Common Good Award
Shelley Hearne ’83, an extraordinary public servant, has a long-standing record of important work at those critical junctures where science and public policy intersect. For her tireless efforts, Hearne, a visiting professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has been selected by the Bowdoin College Board of Trustees to receive the 2013 Common Good Award.

Alumni Service Award
For his decades of varied and distinguished service to the College, Bob Lakin ’68 has been named the recipient of the 2013 Alumni Service Award, recognizing a record of exemplary service to the College, rather than a single act, and is the highest honor given by the Alumni Council.

Distinguished Educator Award
Jane Foley Fried ’83, Head of School at The Brearley School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, has been honored by the Bowdoin College Alumni Council with the 2013 Distinguished Educator Award. The award was established in 1964 to recognize outstanding achievement in education (teaching or administration) by a member of the Bowdoin community.
