Stories of the impressive life and times of American Civil War hero and Medal of Honor recipient General Oliver Otis Howard, a member of the Class of 1850, were regaled on C-SPAN2’s Book TV in an interview with George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives Director Richard Lindemann. Howard went on to serve as commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau and helped in the founding of both Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.

The Howard segment is one in a series of Bowdoin-related pieces airing recently on C-SPAN. Others highlight the papers of Sen. George Mitchell ’54, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s presence on campus and Supreme Court Justice Melville Fuller, of the Class of 1853.

Bowdoin is preparing to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War with Alumni College programming. “The Afterlife of the American Civil War,” a series scheduled August 8-11, 2013, will feature keynote speakers, talks by Bowdoin faculty and walking tours of historic Brunswick.
