Last Saturday over 100 Bowdoin students laced up their shoes out at Pickard Field to show their support for Grassroot Soccer’s 4th annual 3v3 charity soccer tournament. The event, brought to Bowdoin four years ago by Kat Flaherty ’11 and Casey Blossom ’13, raises money and awareness for Grassroot Soccer, a non-profit organization that harnesses the power of soccer to educate youth in sub-Saharan Africa about HIV/AIDS.
The tournament was a culmination of a semester full of programming, including a “Jerseys and Kicks” theme pub night, free STD testing day in collaboration with Bowdoin’s health center and Peer Health, screening of oscar-nominated documentary “How to Survive a Plague” and a Thorne dining hall night that educated students about HIV/AIDS statistics. Twenty-two teams registered for the tournament on Saturday, helping raise over $1,000 for the cause. This year’s event was organized by a committee of 30 Bowdoin varsity soccer players and co-chaired by seniors Alex Thomas ’13 and Casey Blossom ’13.
