Exploring Natalie Johnson ’13’s Abstract World of Dance Archives

Before Natalie Johnson graduated last spring, she choreographed an hour-long dance performance for her senior year independent project. She and three other Bowdoin students, Emily Bungert ’15, Audrey Blood ’13 and George Ellzey ’13, performed the evocative pieces of AGEN, her show.

In this video, which includes footage of the her final performance, Johnson talks about the process of creating AGEN. She explains why she works primarily in the abstract and offers a few insights into her imagination.

Currently Johnson is enrolled in a two-year certificate program in ballet and contemporary dance at the Peridance Capezio Center in Manhattan. “I’ll also be doing some choreography of my own, as well as performing the works of visiting choreographers at the Salvatore Capezio Theater in New York City,” she said.

Her long-term dream is to own her own dance company, which would allow her to regularly choreograph new pieces, work with a consistent group of people and share her work with as many people as she can, she said. “That would only be after I have worked professionally as a dance performer first, dancing for a company and hopefully starting to get choreographic commissions here and there. I’d like to stay in New York City.”
