Amid a speech delivered Wednesday night about the prospects for peace in the Middle East, former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell ’54 told the audience at the University of Southern Maine about two strangers who transformed his life – a businessman in his native Waterville and Bowdoin College Director of Admissions Hubert Seely Shaw.
“These men didn’t know me, but they made it possible for me to go to college,” says Mitchell in a quote appearing in the Portland Press Herald, “and that has stuck with me throughout my entire life.”
