Bowdoin Dining Services cooked up its annual Locavore Dinner Wednesday night to celebrate all that Maine has to offer, digestibly speaking.
Thorne Dining Hall served curried carrot soup made with Maine carrots and shrimp cakes with spicy remoulade sauce from a local catch. A cranberry slaw was featured in the salad bar, and a local cheese maker provided the cheese for a baked macaroni. The dining hall made its own beer-braised kielbasa, using beer brewed in Portland. For dessert, diners had their choice of pumpkin bread, apple brownies or a sundae bar with apple/cinnamon and blueberry sauce. For the complete menu and food sources, click the menu thumbnail.
Following the dinner was a screening of Meet Your Farmer, a series of short films about farms in Maine. John Piotti, one of Maine’s leading farm advocates, spoke at the event along with a panel of local farmers. The evening was part of Environmental Studies’ ongoing Meet What You Eat events.
