Museum Pieces Offer Odes to Spring, Love and Otis Redding Archives

museumpieces2014This year’s Museum Pieces included original dances that touched on themes of love, spring and exams, as well as featured a bouncy bee and a beneficent angel. Museum Pieces is an outdoor dance performed every spring on the steps of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.

The two videos below depict the first and second parts of the performance. In part one, students from Dance 2241: Afro-Modern Dance choreographed and performed a dance to Otis Redding’s “The Dock of the Bay.” Mollie Friedlander ’14 and Diamond Walker ’17 choreographed the second dance, “Partition,” performed by the student dance group Obvious. Members of various student dance groups collaborated on the third piece, “Same Love.”

Paul Sarvis and Gwyneth Jones, both senior lecturers in dance performance, rather sardonically (given the weather of late) choreographed this year’s finale, “Ode to Spring,” shown in the second video. Students from four dance classes performed the piece with faculty and staff. Michael Wood, associate director of first-year programs, is the singing ’70s guy and Kim Pacelli, senior associate dean, dances the part of the fairy angel.
