Dire Market Conditions Force Bart D’Alauro ’95 To Close DVD Rental Business Archives

Bart & Greg’s DVD Explosion in downtown Brunswick—a fixture beloved by area movie buffs—is closing its doors after fifteen years due to the declining film rental market.

Owner Bart D’Alauro ’95, who also works in the Bowdoin College library, told The Portland Press Herald he decided to close after suffering his worst November on record.

November is typically the store’s best month, he explained, but the popularity of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu has made life next-to-impossible for independent video stores.

The store, located in the Tontine Mall just minutes from campus, “has an eclectic selection ranging from Hollywood blockbuster to art house fare.” It will close at the end of December.

This is not only a great loss to our community but a great loss to culture – technology does not always benefit our world. The break down of human connection is a tremendous loss.
