Bowdoin’s recent $5 million dollar gift from Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings ’83 is highlighted in Inside Philanthropy as evidence that his interest goes beyond helping underprivileged students in the door, to supporting them through their college career.
The money is being used to establish a program to improve the graduation rates of low-income students, first-generation students and those students traditionally underrepresented on college campuses.
The THRIVE program, as it’s called, offers academic and other support to participating students, helping them to get the most of their Bowdoin experience. “Getting these kids into college turns out to only be part of the equation; getting them through college can be far tougher,” writes Inside Philanthropy’s Mike Scutari.

This is a response beyond the call of generosity. All to Bowdoin’s success and to Reed. Cheers!
