Goldsmith Adams Research Award: Sapporo in Meiji Era Japan Archives

Ethan Barkalow ’19, recipient of a Goldsmith Adams Research Award, will spend the summer in Japan conducting research on the development of the city of Sapporo in Meiji Japan and continuing his Japanese language studies.

He will enroll in the eight-week Hokkaido International Foundation (HIF) Japanese Language and Culture Program in Hakodate, Japan, where he will live with a Japanese host family and take intensive daily language classes. Ethan’s studies at HIF will also include an independent study in which he will work on his history research project using source material in Japanese. Upon finishing the language immersion program, he will travel to Sapporo and conduct research at the Hokkaido University Library and the Hokkaido Archives. After he returns to Bowdoin, he intends to use his summer research to pursue an honors project in Japanese history.
