common good2President Clayton Rose, along with staff from the Joseph McKeen Center for the Common Good, came together recently to recognize and honor the work of students, faculty, staff, and community members for their dedication to advancing the common good through service, teaching, scholarship, and community engagement.

“Unlike most organizations I’ve worked with,” said Rose, “we try to live our values here at Bowdoin.” In his opening remarks, he talked of the day-to-day values embodied by the Bowdoin community, like warmth, humility, respect and integrity.

“There’s an overarching value which is embodied in the common good,” said Rose. “and the notion that there’s something beyond ourselves that we owe an obligation to.” He described the McKeen Center as the “engine room” behind the Bowdoin community’s efforts to engage with the common good.
