Video: Bowdoin’s Chakkalakal Shares Stories of Harriet Beecher Stowe with ‘Book TV’ (C-SPAN) Archives

Drawing on her deep expertise in the area of Harriet Beecher Stowe and her landmark novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Associate Professor of Africana Studies and English Tess Chakkalakal was herself in the role of storyteller as she shared insight into the author and the famous text with C-SPAN2’s Book TV.

Bowdoin is preparing to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War with Alumni College programming. “The Afterlife of the American Civil War,” a series scheduled August 8-11, 2013, will feature keynote speakers, talks by Bowdoin faculty and walking tours of historic Brunswick.

Other Bowdoin-related C-SPAN segments include those examining the papers of Sen. George Mitchell ’54 and Oliver Otis Howard, of the Class of 1850 – held by Bowdoin’s George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives. Another segment focuses on Supreme Court Justice Melville Fuller, of the Class of 1853.
