The Northern Bites, Bowdoin’s robot soccer team, played well but was eliminated before final rounds at the 2012 RoboCup World Championship Games in Mexico City. Having made it to the Round of 16, the Northern Bites beat the Berlin United team, but lost games to Penn and the University of Edinburgh, which knocked the team out of the quarterfinals.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team,” says team advisor and computer science professor Eric Chown.

“Two months ago at the U.S. Open we only scored one goal in four games. Here we scored 11 and only gave up 9. Our improvement was unbelievable and it is a testament to a lot of hard work from the students.  We clearly were one of the 10 best teams in the world, and were one of the few teams not to score any own-goals. Given that we have six returning seniors I am confident that next year’s team will be battling for the top of the league again.”

Wils Dawson ’13 and Josh Zalinger ’13 were referees for the world championship and consolation games; Dawson was also elected to the league’s Technical Committee, the group that sets the rules for the next competition. Visit the Northern Bites blog.
