Northern Bites, Bowdoin’s soccer-playing robot team, made it through the first rounds to advance to the quarterfinals at the international 2013 RoboCup, which was held this weekend in Eindhoven, a city in the Netherlands.
Northern Bites landed in the top eight, automatically qualifying the team for the competition next year. In the round before quarterfinals, Northern Bites beat the Dutch Nao Team (1-0), Edinferno (1-0), and RoboEireann (2-1). In the quarterfinals, Bowdoin lost to Texas 7-0. The Texas team was last year’s world champions.
“We’re disappointed that we didn’t have a better game against them, but we’re all very proud of what we have accomplished,” computer science professor and faculty advisor Eric Chown said. “The fact that Bowdin has one of the eight best robot soccer teams in the world is amazing.”
