The Museum is delighted to welcome five Bowdoin student interns this summer to engage in a range of different projects, programs, and exhibitions. We look forward to working with the students whose contributions to each aspect of the BCMA’s mission are indispensible to our daily work.
Danny Banks ’19 is a rising junior pursuing an Art History and German double major. Danny will be working with the BCMA associate director Rebekah Beaulieu and the BCMA assistant director of museum communications Suzanne Bergeron as the Administrative and Communications Assistant. Originally from Boston, Danny’s interest in Museum Studies and Architecture made him a frequent visitor to and Teen Visitor Aide at the Museum of Fine Arts. His academic experience in computational studies and anthropology will be an asset in both of his roles at the BCMA this summer.
Seth Chatterton ’19, a rising junior, will join the Museum in July as the Digital Curatorial Assistant, acting as an intermediary between the BCMA and the Bowdoin IT Department in developing new electronic resources that will increase accessibility to the Museum’s collections. Originally from Santa Clara, California, Seth is a double major in Physics and Math/Computer Science. His background in programming will be put to use in his contribution to the Assyrian Relief smartphone app and webpage, as well as the BCMA’s new public keyword initiative.
The Museum’s three Curatorial and Education Assistants, Johna Cook ’19, Juliette Dankens ’18, and Daniel Rechtschaffen ’18, will be designing educational resources for the Museum’s summer exhibitions, organizing a number of children’s activities and Family Saturdays throughout the summer, leading daily tours of the summer exhibitions, and conducting research on individual curatorial projects.
Johna Cook is a rising junior currently pursuing a Government and Legal Studies and Russian double major, with a specific focus in International Relations. In addition to her educational responsibilities, Johna will be working directly with co-director Frank Goodyear to curate an exhibition of Russian photography to open this September in conjunction with the forthcoming exhibition Constructing the Revolution: Soviet Propaganda Posters from between the World Wars.
Juliette Dankens recently returned from a semester at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she studied architecture and design. As a rising senior majoring in Visual Art and Mathematics with a minor in Economics, Juliette will be contributing to the Museum’s educational offerings this summer, as well as assisting Curatorial Fellow Ellen Tani with research associated with the exhibition Second Sight: The Paradox of Vision in Contemporary Art, which opens in March 2018.
Daniel Rechtschaffen, the Hilton and Esta Kramer Summer Intern, is a rising senior majoring in Art History and minoring in French. Daniel was part of Professor Stephen Perkinson’s seminar “Memory, Mourning, and the Macabre,” which contributed research and text elements to the current exhibition the Ivory Mirror: The Art of Mortality in Renaissance Europe. Daniel is also engaged with the arts community on campus as the editor-in-chief of the student-produced Bowdoin Journal of Art. Daniel will work with curator Joachim Homann to research a large collection of French artwork gifted to Bowdoin College by Professor Artine Artinian ’31.
