Sociology major Courtney Chuang ’15, has been awarded the 2015 Sibley Prize. Each year the Sibley Prize is awarded to that member of the Senior class majoring in Sociology or Anthropology who has the highest mid-year general scholastic average in his/her Bowdoin Class.
This prize was established in 1989 in honor of Elbridge Sibley, by Milton M. Gordon ’39,
a student of Professor Sibley and himself a prominent sociologist at the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst who is best known for his important book on Assimilation in
American Life. Professor Gordon’s teacher here, Elbridge Sibley, was a faculty member
at Bowdoin in the 1930’s and left about 1940 to serve four years in what is now the
Office of Statistical Policy of the federal government. In 1944 Elbridge Sibley began a 26
year career with the Social Science Research Council.
The Sibley Prize will be presented to Courtney at the Honors Day ceremony on May 6th.
