I think the visceral impact of attending a live opera can’t be beaten. It’s the same thing with a large-format or epic movie – so much better in the cinema. But what of this golden age of tv we are living in? It’s the next big challenge for live performance: people can stay home and for minimum cost witness the most remarkable production values and artistic and creative teams that television has ever seen. I think it will have a negative impact on live theatre for sure. As for Puccini, he would have written film soundtracks if he had lived a little later. His orchestrations are so specific and so illustrative. He certainly has influenced some of the great film composers.
