Acclaimed feminist writer Susan Faludi, currently Tallman Scholar in Gender and Women’s Studies at Bowdoin, will deliver a lecture called “Feminism, Interrupted: Why Can’t the Women’s Movement Pass Down Power?” as part of her 2013-2014 Tallman residency. The lecture will be held Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Nation, Faludi is also a bestselling author. Her book Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. Other works include Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man, and her most recent book,The Terror Dream: Myth and Misogyny in an Insecure America, in which she examines the post-9/11 outpouring in the media, popular culture, and political life.

Now in her second semester on the Bowdoin faculty, Faludi is teaching a spring course called “Writing Women,” following up her fall first-year seminar on intergenerational feminism. Her classes “have been absolutely full, with waiting lists of students desperately trying to get in,” said Kristen Ghodsee, director of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program.

As for the students who managed to snag spots in Faludi’s courses, “they have benefited from an incredible amount of individual attention,” Ghodsee said. She added that Faludi’s residency “has been really wonderful in exposing our majors to this type of creative production that’s different from the scholarly writing they see in many of their other classes.”

“This is someone who can take knowledge and theory and research, and package it in a way that a lot of people will read and be interested in,” Ghodsee said. “When Susan Faludi weighs in, the public listens.”
