President Clayton Rose Reads a Pop-up Poem about ‘A Couple’ Archives

President Clayton Rose read a poem Monday at noon as part of the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library’s Pop-up Poetry readings happening throughout April, in celebration of National Poetry Month.

Before he read Carl Sandburg’s poem, A Couple, Rose said he had decided that selecting a poem to read aloud says a lot about what one wants to reveal about oneself, and seems more personal than prose.

A Couple, he added, was the poem he had read at his wedding thirty-five years ago to his wife, Julianne. “At its core, it’s about love,” Rose said. “And I wanted to share that with you.”

You can read the poem on Google books.
